Summary

Phil Collins is Deputy Dean (Academic Affairs) in the College of Engineering, Design & Physical Sciences and Reader in Geology & Geotechnical Engineering in the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering.  He completed his doctoral research into the Quaternary geology of the Kennet Valley at the University of Reading in 1994 before undertaking postdoctoral studies into relative sea level change in the Department of Geography & Earth Sciences at the West London Institute. Phil became a lecturer at Brunel University College in 1995, moving to the Uxbridge Campus of Brunel University in 1997. 

In 2007, University restructuring saw him join the Department of Mechanical Engineering where he led the establishment of the new Civil Engineering degree programme.  He became Associate Dean in the new College in 2014 and Vice Dean in 2017, before moving to the Deputy Dean role in 2023.  He continues to be an active member of the Department, as well as contributing to a wide range of College and University activities and carrying out geological and geotechnical research.

Responsibility

In my role as Deputy Dean, I have oversight of a broad range of activities. These include: Quality Assurance; Appeals, Complaints and Misconduct; Recruitment; Equality, Diversity & Inclusivity; and PGR matters. I act as delegate for the Executive Dean when needed and also participate in University-level activities such as working groups and course approval panels.

Industrial liaison

From the start of Civil Engineering in 2007, I have actively worked to develop numerous excellent contacts in the  Engineering and wider industrial sector. The current input our courses receive from practising engineers is significant and brings a very applied perspective to what we deliver.

Accreditation

I have been heavily involved in the accreditation process since the start of the Civil Engineering courses in 2007, and have been lead author on a number of accreditation reports submitted to the Joint Board of Moderators.
