Research Interests

I am interested in answering questions of global conservation significance. These include reviewing the top 100 questions of global conservation significance, investigating the barriers to evidence use in conservation policy, as well as global change applications such as wolf-dog hybridization, global mangrove fisheries, 30 by 30 analysis, and indigenous knowledge in the Arctic. My expertise in expert-based assessments such as the Delphi technique, has routinely led to requests for my participation in horizon scanning initiatives.

International evaluation of Sweden’s management of the European eel
Funder: Formas
Duration: October 2022 - September 2023

The European eel Anguilla anguilla has been going through a severe decline across its range and is classified as critically endangered since 2007. This project is focused on eel conservation and identifying implementable actions to reduce the decline of eels and has been funded by the Swedish research agency- FORMAS. The private sector (hydroelectric energy and fisheries) could play a large role in preventing the loss of eels and meeting international targets, hence we will be combining industry knowledge, and our expertise to evaluate current eel management actions. We will be investigating the actions taken for eel management; current decision-making processes when deciding upon eel management including costs; and effectiveness and the types of tools and approaches that could best enhance the practice in the future. We hope that by understanding current practices and reviewing the effectiveness of different management actions, we can optimise eel conservation efforts.
