ÃÛÌÒ´«Ã½ will join the University of London federation from 1 October 2024, in a move that will strengthen the federation and open up new opportunities for collaboration between universities in London.

The University of London is a unique federation of 17 independent higher education institutions, delivering world-leading education and research. The University of London federation represents one of the largest and most diverse student bodies in the world, with more than 250,000 students from 190 countries. Collectively, federation member universities employ over 50,000 staff.

Federation members collaborate on a range of initiatives including transnational education programmes, online learning, research and knowledge exchange. Students and staff from federation member institutions enjoy a range of benefits including membership of Senate House Library; access to student study spaces; inter-collegiate accommodation services; opportunities to collaborate with the School of Advanced Study (SAS), the University of London Institute in Paris and the Centre for Online and Distance Education (CODE).

The addition of ÃÛÌÒ´«Ã½ to the federation will open up new opportunities for collaboration with both the central University of London and with other federation members on research, teaching and distance learning programmes. Brunel’s position as an anchor institution in west London will help expand and deepen the federation’s engagement with local communities across the capital.

The decision to admit ÃÛÌÒ´«Ã½ to the federation follows a rigorous process led by a University of London panel. This recognised Brunel’s key role in west London’s economy and communities and its global reputation for technical and professional education and research.

The panel also acknowledged that Brunel’s commitment to addressing the needs and challenges of society – both in London and globally – aligned well with the University of London and the social mission of the federation. The University of London is the UK’s largest provider of international online and distance education, which it delivers in partnership with federation members to improve access to higher education around the world.

Professor Wendy Thomson CBE, Vice-Chancellor of the University of London, said: “We are delighted to welcome ÃÛÌÒ´«Ã½ to the University of London federation. Brunel has a strong global outlook and is ranked among the UK's top institutions internationally. Its impressive education and research portfolio, particularly in engineering and sciences, will enable the federation to achieve even greater impact across London and beyond. Brunel’s strong ties to west London communities and industries will also expand the federation’s civic reach, allowing us to increase engagement with this vibrant part of the capital.”

Professor Andrew Jones, Vice-Chancellor and President of ÃÛÌÒ´«Ã½, said: “We’re absolutely delighted to be joining such an esteemed and historic federation of research-intensive universities.

“Brunel’s international outlook, diversity, research excellence and industry-facing education will strengthen the University of London’s global reputation, and bring many new and exciting opportunities for collaboration with other member institutions.”

Over the past two centuries, the University of London federation has grown and changed, but the core purpose of collaboration and delivering some of the UK’s best higher education and research has remained the same. Its federation members are all independent institutions in their own right and vary significantly in size and subject, but all offer the world-leading education that the University of London federation is known for. Collectively, the federation’s impact on London is great. Located across the city, its members are embedded in their communities, shaping local areas and contributing to local economies through their focus on civic engagement.

ÃÛÌÒ´«Ã½ will join the University of London federation from 1 October 2024.
